HOW RUGBY INSTITUTES SHAPE THE LEADERS OF THE FUTURE

What we can Learn from Siya Kolisi

Siya Kolisi in his post -match interview this past weekend, after the brutal Ireland and South Africa world-cup winning side clash, expressed the importance of great leadership , and for it to rise from our youth in South Africa.

He explained how it is not about the colour of his own skin being named the “first black captain” of South African rugby but rather the ability to lead his team members from diverse players from such very different backgrounds- and socio- economic differences. It is about embracing diversity and the power within it, solving problems, and building trust with effective leadership.

A rainbow nation’s reality

South Africa is a rainbow nation, the realities of on-field challenges of a multi- cultural rugby team is also evident from any locker room to boardroom, as well as our own South-African government. It takes a special leader to unlock this power within diversity, and the truth is nothing has taught us more on this particular subject as a nation, than our Springbok team under Siya’s and Rassie Erasmus’s leadership. “Sport has the power to change the world”- famous quote by Mr Nelson Mandela during the 1995 world-cup. He also said, as Francois Pienaar lifted the famous Webb Ellis trophy, that “ Sport is a language that our youth understands”.

Siya, who has won two rugby world cups for rugby South Africa, has invited young South Africans to stand up and become the next generation leaders, that will carry this legacy forward and lead with intention, achieve success, cross barriers of race, language and culture and learn to embrace the beautiful differences in our DNA!

At UXi International Rugby Institutes, management and coaches strive to cultivate and nurture leadership through the accredited Life Skills program offered, the composition of the various national institute players are very diverse in every way, as such players have the opportunity to practise their leadership styles and lessons learnt from a Siya and other successful rugby captains in South Africa at our institutes, as we are fortunate to have so many role-models in a leadership role, that we also continue study for best practice in South African rugby.

UXi also challenges players to look at successful businessmen and women in leadership as their success stories in business also teach valuable lessons for on-field success. TEAMWORK is the only key to success, but also to unlock the power of TEAM we have to understand the heart behind every jersey in the team and fully understand the group of people we have to work with.

Our current era

We live in an era where urgent leadership and leadership qualities  are required in our communities and families. It is easier to follow than to lead in today’s world.Effective leaders must be willing to accept criticism and pressure from team mates as well as superiors, as a leader is always expected to perform and out- perform. UXi teaches their players the hard realities of Life and unlock the composition of their own identities. Self-awareness and identity are keys to growing into a future leader with an individual leadership style, it takes as much work, practise, and a lifetime of mistakes to become a great leader, and even then, you must be able to continuously evolve and learn within your management style.

That is the true quality of a natural leader, to be able to listen and accept that you are not always right and actively seek to never allow setbacks or criticism to derail you from your vision. We also need to realise that there are different types of leadership styles, and studying towards a qualification in leadership will bring understanding of these.

Mental toughness and resilience are naturally taught in sport- and it is for this reason that learning from sport for life is so powerful. Add academic studies into an environment where you are practising a sports code you love, evolve as an athlete and leader, whilst also ensuring the knowledge and skills academically and it has the power to change our youth, our country and our society!

There is no more powerful combination than that of sport development and academic studies added together in a disciplined structure, to cultivate our next generation of good leaders in South Africa and even 12 years of school education will not teach these stills.

Key take-aways?

1)       How can I become an effective leader in sport?

By practising your leadership skills in an environment that will allow you to learn and grow, develop confidence, and communication skills by practising and doing the same on a daily basis. The UXi rugby institutes place a high value on developing soft skills for life. Their rugby development environments attract players from all over South Africa and internationally, making it the ideal learning environment for a future leader.

2)       Do I require any special training to become a rugby captain?

Leadership skills come naturally for a lot of individuals- some might not even know they possess these skills if it is not unlocked and nurtured in the right manner. An individual does not become a great leader overnight, it takes a lot of learning through mistakes, studying great leader’s attributes and cultivating the habits of a great leader. Studies in management will most definitely give a clear understanding of the differences between managers and leaders, it will teach the fundamental principles- however, the softer skills such as communication, perception, listening skills, overcoming cultural diversity can only be taught by following an accredited Life Skills program in sport such as the one offered by UXi Sport. Leaders must also learn to adapt constantly to change, think back to the covid-19 pandemic and imagine who this shaped our leaders for the future.

OVERSEAS RUGBY TOUR INVESTMENT VS RUGBY DEVELOPMENT AND STUDIES

What are the realities and what is the return on investment can you expect?

Many parents and players are overwhelmed with the decisions they need to make about their players’ futures, post schooling in South Africa. For many it seems like there are no real opportunities in the country to remain committed to South African rugby for various reasons, which most of these reasons are also heightened by the political-economic landscape, that drives feelings of anxiety, rejection, and often abandonment.  It seems attractive to invest into academies or  tour operators who promise lucrative international play opportunities and contracts.

But what are the realities of these opportunities that you should question and research before you make these decisions based on emotion and expectation?

For a parent or sponsor who has access to unlimited funds and are happy to spend money on a “gap-year” experience and able to support the player’s living expenses internationally – by all means it’s a privilege to afford a player such an experience, without any concern about a career outside or after rugby in the event of injury or other unforeseen events.

But for the average parent and sponsor funds are limited for post matric plans, and it is also true that for every parent their child’s future whether in sport, business, or life, is of great concern. As such, careful consideration should be made in terms of where those funds are spent to guarantee the best outcome for their futures, even if they all dream of being part of a rugby world cup. Although international tours and play might sound attractive, as well as a possible, (not guaranteed), contract at a 3rd Tier rugby ranked country at an attractive exchange rate remuneration, the realities are that many players, parents, and sponsors are not prepared, nor fully understand what these promised opportunities hold.

Typically, in South Africa there are two approaches to lure parents into investing hard-earned and limited funds into these promises.

  1. Tour Operators: who scout at tournaments and inform players that they have been “selected” to their teams to tour anywhere from Portugal, Italy, France, and Ireland. It appears as if it is a niche opportunity and the player and parents feel honoured for the “selection”. Parents are often willing to obtain financial loans for a two- week play, stay and travel experience. It is indeed an experience for a player that has never played a match against an international side, as well as travelling to an international destination with a specially branded tour clothing kit. But what is the real sustainable value that he/she receives after such a tour? The tour operator’s main business is to set up matches at clubs that they are associated with and organise a few site-seeing activities, over a few days, with some meals included. The number of players that ever gets a real opportunity to these clubs or teams against who they compete are questionable. Average cost R56 000- R70 000, average 10- night stay, depending on the destination- excluding pocket money and some meals.
  2. Academies: who offer overseas tour packages as part of their fees, with the promise of an overseas contract as a speciality service and skills taught to their players. Contracts in France and the UK for Under 21 are far and few- as First Tier rugby countries all have quotas on international player allowances in their teams. It is only top rugby players who will ever receive an invitation directly from such clubs with a lucrative contract or players with a heritage to such countries. For most of the 3rd tier countries the club offer is never enough to support a player’s living costs and it is the parent and or sponsor who must supplement living expenses in Euro or Pounds. Average cost R85 000- R96 000 for 9 months at the academy and a two -week tour.

What are the alternatives?

  1. Attend an Institute that offers an accredited rugby development programme, with a sports-science based data driven monitoring and evaluation system that can compile accurate reports and statistics of the player’s improvement that will ultimately serve as a professional and credible reference and CV compilation. These Institutes, because of their Provincial Union pathways, offer direct opportunities to A- League club competitions, Currie Cup trials and other national competitions. This will prepare a player properly for international play opportunities at a later stage when he/she is better equipped , conditioned and often rehabilitated after older injuries. The truth is international clubs will not invest into players without trach-records, professional match footage and credible references unless they are already rugby union players at a semi-or professional level. Adding a provincial cap of a national team to a CV is more meaningful to be able to secure international contracts at a sustainable remuneration.
  2. Institutes offer a variety of accredited academic programs  and rugby studies with World Rugby, within a reputable high performance rugby development schedule, that can secure a future after rugby, assure work opportunities nationally and internationally to supplement a basic club offer contract. It also prepares the player emotionally and physically,( injury prevention) for the challenges of international rugby, communication barriers and financial planning. Having a qualification in your backpack to accompany you on your journey for life prepares the player for a plan B. This is a real and tangible and sustainable investment.
  3. Accredited institutes allow parents to obtain study loans that will cover the programs, and the repayments are spread over a period of time, in comparison to a massive once-off expense for a limited period.

Average cost R56 000- R89 000 for 12 months including an accredited national program.

Further helpful tips;

  1. Don’t ever abandon your South African rugby roots as you might need to return to them if expectations abroad are not met. Remain in contact with a rugby team head coach who has credible ties to a rugby union.
  2. Be very well prepared for the country you are leaving for, understanding the language barriers, financial systems and other challenges.
  3. Understand the club structure and rugby culture you are leaving to,other nations rugby is very unique in their culture and it is not a “shoe-fit” for all.
  4. Learn to speak a foreign language when leaving for a country where English is not the 1st language as understanding instructions and coaching will be difficult,
  5. Don’t ever underestimate the value of an education, post matric, no matter how lucrative your sport journey may appear- as this is your plan B both nationally and internationally.
  6. Find a rugby institute who can offer you real opportunities if you qualify with secure international links, that offers long term benefits and is  more than a 2-week short stay journey. This implies a succession plan in development that continues at an international academy or institute such as Leicester Tigers in the UK.
  7. Find a rugby institute with qualified sport scientists and accredited strength and conditioning coaches with an holistic approach to exercise medicine, rehabilitation and wellness.
  8. Women’s rugby in South Africa has a long way to go to prepare players for the far advanced women’s game internationally. Institutes who have an experienced and credible coaching team with women’s rugby, such as the Harlequins international rugby institute, offer grass-root rugby development programs to high performance rugby programs , life-skills and rugby understanding for women at all levels and from all backgrounds.

Author: A parent who has been there, done it, and worn the “international promise” T-shirt- with nothing to show for it but an empty bank balance, and an unemployed 20-year old player. Don’t be another victim.

RUGBY ACADEMY VS RUGBY INSTITUTE

WHY UXI IS A RUGBY INSTITUTE MODEL

There is often confusion about the difference between an Academy and an Institute in Sport.

Here are some helpful explanations and research into their key differences.

Although the word academy is often associated with various sport codes, there are some fundamental differences in the approach and design of the institution who offers these models..

It is very important for parents, sponsors and the athlete to do proper research to determine which of the two models fit their sport development needs the most. In most instances they will offer coaching and strength conditioning with some degree of support in nutrition and wellness. However, an Institute employs a comprehensive qualified and experienced full-time Sports Science Team, who constantly monitors and evaluates the athlete on a daily basis, with technology driven data, that gives an accurate and unbiased report of the athlete’s performance over time.

This forms the foundation on which individual athletic sport development is based on, and what the coaching team must focus on when looking at individual athletic development. Without science-based data which also includes game statistics monitoring, it will be impossible to track a return on investment of the cost paid to attend a sport development program. Prospective parents and athletes are often drawn to superficial promises on a website or social media, but the best advice is to visit the establishments and meet the team who will be responsible for the athlete both on- and off the field. The team of individuals who take responsibility and accountability for the athlete’s performance is the key to improved performance. It is a team dedicated to continued improvement that includes continuous development of their own knowledge and skill and who has a heart for teaching and developing a young athlete.

Often young athletes are broken in spirit due to how others have treated them in a sports environment, breaking their self- confidence and abilities through “words and actions”. It is for this reason that it is recommended to meet the team who will work with the athlete on a daily basis, as this team has to try and “undo” a lot of mental barriers to performance. They also have to have an understanding and compassion for diverse types of athletes who come from different backgrounds and levels of development. It takes less input and investment to develop a top athlete versus one who still needs at least one to three years of development, due to inequalities.

Most academies in Europe, the US and even in South Africa are attended by athletes from young ages with the purpose to lay the foundational knowledge and skills in a particular sport code. It is from here that the popularity for academies originate from, as some of the academy’s feed into the semi-professional structures, or are based within club’s senior teams. Parents also need to understand that an academy or institute comprises many different athletes who pay to attend the facilities and services, and have access to their coaches. An academy or institute should never be rated on how many matches their teams win for a respective academy or institute, as their fundamental purpose is not to COMPETE as an institution, but for the athlete to compete and receive various opportunities to compete at club, provincial or national level.

An academy or institution should be rated on the individual performance improvement of the athlete that must be properly documented in an acceptable world-class sports science format. Why is this important? As it becomes part of the CV and marketing pack of the athlete, to present to agents and wherever they wish to apply for a position in the future. It is a reference to the reader as to the quality of institution he/she attended as well as it is a reference to the quality of athlete they are considering. Ask for references, and success stories in the local market first and foremost. International play opportunities are not an OPEN SOURCE to all South Africans, no matter what they promise each prospective player, best is to ask for the percentage of placements from an annual co-horde.

Institutes such as the UXi International Rugby group, also offers access to accredited education programs and academically supports these with project managers and academic coordinators. Accredited Life Skill programs that also assists with workplace readiness, for after rugby is critical. These programmes must focus on communication skills, emotional and spiritual intelligence, diversity, job-search, CV compilation, business etiquette, social media etc.

In general Institutes prepare players better for life in- and after rugby due to the quality and education levels of their coaches, sport scientists and player student support structures.

American rugby players inspired by South African culture

From left to right: Scott Ciamarichello, Maxwell Saenz, Josh Butler, and Howie Heller

Four American exchange students find themselves entrenched in a new and unique rugby culture – one of the most popular sports in South Africa – as part of an exchange programme at UXi International Rugby Institutes in Stellenbosch. The players, who have all been inspired by the National team, in Green and Gold,  offered insight into their experiences and reflections since landing in Cape Town.

A pivotal learning for them has been how mistakes and losses are being managed. This has left an indelible mark on Josh Butler (23), Howie Heller (18), Maxwell Saenz (20), and Scott Ciamarichello (20).

The resilience of the rugby teams in South Africa is applaudable, going back to the first time  François Pienaar lifted the Webb Ellis trophy in 1995 to what everyone witnessed and experienced with the Springboks’ journey since then. This resilience is also tangible in the semi-professional club structures of a typical rugby union within the South African rugby union landscape.

The quartet finds the experience of being part of a South African rugby programme very inspiring, making notable mentions of how everyone uplifts, motivates, and inspires each other despite race, colour, or creed. Despite the brief time, they have been inspired and have learnt more than they thought they would after just a few weeks of training. This has been their experience at UXi Sport.

Sports can transcend culture and language barriers, the four have been offered some informal language lessons as well. We have seen how rugby has brought together a diverse team with a Black captain during the world cup final, a team that has learnt 2023 rugby Australia and New Zealand teams some valuable lessons.  This has inspired not only American rugby, but the world over, through inspiring storytelling as was seen in the documentary series, Chasing The Sun.

Rugby in South Africa has so much to offer to USA rugby from a rugby development perspective and one of the most effective ways to do this is through these exchange program initiations.

Let us get to know the American quartet and why the American players are inspired….

Josh Butler, University of San Diego, California

Butler, who has been playing rugby for just one year, is relishing the opportunity to gain experience and grow while in South Africa. He has had the chance to play multiple positions, transitioning from number eight back in San Diego to winger and inside centre while at UXi.

“The experience is awesome,” he said. “The camaraderie and all the people are so welcoming. The [South African rugby] culture is very good and strong, which is something we are not used to. Everyone is just incredibly positive every day, I like that.”

Howie Heller, Atlanta, Georgia

Heller, who plays for West Point, has been particularly struck by the passion and camaraderie of his South African teammates. The high-energy environment, where players support and motivate each other intensely was evident to him.

“Everybody’s super passionate about the game,” he observed. “In the training session yesterday, I would say one of the differences I’ve noticed is one, everybody’s super skilled, and two, everybody’s having fun with everyone, smiling, just playing rugby with their friends.”

Maxwell Saenz, University of San Diego, California

For Saenz, the fast-paced and unpredictable nature of South African rugby has been a thrilling adjustment. “It is quick, but it is also chaotic,” he explained. “There are a lot more big hits [than what we are used to], knock-ons, and penalties. You do not know what is going to happen. This is great and I love it.”

Maxwell highlighted the keen sense of unity and team spirit, saying, “No matter how good or how bad you play, you always want to get a win. It is not glory hunting or anything – you are just trying to win.”

Scott Ciamarichello, Green Bay, Wisconsin

Ciamarichello, who plays for the Green Bay Celtics, has found the transition to South African rugby culture to be a positive experience. “Here it is easier because more than one coach is helping you with your development,” he said. He also appreciated the welcoming nature of his South African teammates and their willingness to teach him unfamiliar words and phrases.

“The boys here have been really helpful with that and teaching us some words here and there,” he added, mentioning local terms like “dankie,” “lekker,” and “mooi.”

Embracing the Culture and Learning

The players have been quick to embrace the cultural differences and learn from their South African counterparts. Cramarichello mentioned that the language barrier and cultural differences have not been significant issues, thanks to the friendly and helpful nature of the local players.

Long-lasting Impact

Each player plans to take back valuable lessons and experiences to their respective teams in the United States. Heller emphasised the importance of speed and aggression in the game, which he plans to incorporate back home.

“Everything here is super impressive. The coaches enforce that a lot,” he said. “[I will] try to take back some of the culture and the acceptant approach, and I think our rugby IQ has improved.”

Saenz shared a similar sentiment, noting the confidence he has gained from playing at UXi. “I think the culture and the skills [has been great learning] but also I feel like I found this sort of confidence from all the games and you kind of get a chance to shine almost. You get to make it happen for yourself,” he said.

A Life-changing Opportunity

The exchange program was highly recommended by their coaches who incidentally are from the Eastern Cape, who described it as a life-changing opportunity. Butler, who has only been playing rugby for a year, expressed his eagerness to make the most of this experience.

“I have only played one year so I kind of got to make up for all the years that I did not play. Get as much in as possible.”

Future Aspirations

When not on the rugby field, these students are pursuing diverse career paths. Butler is studying real estate and business, Saenz is interested in geography and economics, Heller is undergoing military training at West Point, and Cramarichello aspires to become a lawyer.

The American players at UXi Sport and Rugby Academy are not only honing their rugby skills but also embracing the rich culture and camaraderie that South African rugby offers. Their experiences are sure to leave a lasting impact, both on their personal growth and their future rugby careers. They have formed lifelong friendships and have become part of the rugby network in South Africa,

International Rugby Play Opportunities for the Semi-Pro

For semi-professional players looking to progress in their careers, international rugby provides an abundance of chances. These play chances are available in a variety of leagues and nations, offering exposure and experience that are essential for development. Entering the international arena may be a game-changer for many budding athletes, providing opportunities for growth on both a personal and professional level.

It is important though to keep the realities of overseas play, travel and living in mind and to be well prepared for the exciting journey with many opportunities and challenges. Many players leaving school are ill prepared for this, and also  uncertain how to prepare.

This article is aimed to give players a better understanding and act as a guide into the landscape of international player dreams.

Key Takeaways

  • Exposure and Experience: Semi-pro players gain valuable exposure and experience by participating in international rugby.
  • Diverse Leagues: Opportunities exist across various leagues worldwide, including top rugby nations.
  • Personal Development: Playing internationally fosters personal growth, cultural exchange, and broader career prospects.
  • The South African reality

International Rugby Play Opportunities

Europe: The Heart of Rugby Union

Rugby is quite popular in Europe, and there are several options for semi-pro players. The English Premiership, the French Top 14, and the Pro14—which consists of teams from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Italy—are just a few of the elite divisions on the continent. In addition to being competitive, these leagues give participants a stage on which to display their skills in front of a worldwide audience.

English Premiership

The English Premiership is well known for its fierce competitiveness and extensive training initiatives. A route to professional contracts is available for semi-pro athletes who enroll in academies connected to elite teams. Furthermore, the league’s global exposure draws scouts from all over the world, which increases players’ chances of getting noticed.

French Top 14

Another elite league renowned for its skill level and physicality is the French Top 14. Semi-pro players have the chance to experience a rugby-centric society in France, where the game is enthusiastically embraced, by playing there. The league is a desirable location because it offers significant financial incentives.

Southern Hemisphere: Rugby Powerhouses

The strongest rugby teams and leagues are found in the Southern Hemisphere, specifically in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Semi-pro players are drawn to the Super Rugby League, which includes teams from these nations.

New Zealand

Rugby culture in New Zealand is second to none, and the All Blacks are a representation of the pinnacle of the game. Semi-pro athletes can advance to higher levels of play by competing in domestic tournaments like the Mitre 10 Cup. The nation’s focus on grassroots development guarantees that athletes receive the best coaching and assistance possible.

Australia

Australia participates in domestic rugby events such as the National Rugby Championship (NRC) and Super Rugby, providing a competitive rugby environment. Australia’s semi-pro rugby players benefit from both the country’s robust rugby infrastructure and the chance to study under seasoned pros.

United States: Emerging Opportunities

USA Rugby is making great progress in the development of rugby, and the sport is expanding quickly in the US. Established in 2018, the Major League Rugby (MLR) offers participants, including semi-professional athletes, a professional platform to compete at a high level. The league’s growth has given players a lot of chances to travel abroad and obtain experience.

The South African Reality

South Africa: A Rugby Nation

South Africa, with its extensive rugby history, offers semi-professional players a distinct environment. Under the leadership of the South African Rugby Union (SARU), the nation’s rugby union is among the best in the world, generating elite players and upholding a competitive domestic league system.

Domestic Leagues and Competitions

One of the oldest and most prominent rugby competitions in the world, the Currie Cup, is a part of South Africa’s local rugby landscape. The Currie Cup, which is open to semi-pro players, is an important venue for showing potential. The SuperSport Rugby Challenge and the Vodacom Cup also present more chances for players to advance and become more visible.

Challenges and Opportunities

Although there are plenty of playing chances in South Africa, semi-pro players have particular difficulties. The political and economic climate of the nation is shaped by its past as well as the African National Congress’s continuous efforts to combat inequality, which has an impact on the sports industry. But these difficulties also present chances for athletes to use sport to influence society.

It is also a sad reality that many players, who don’t immediately receive opportunities after schooling, are lured overseas by tour operators and rugby academies with false promises of guaranteed club contracts. Parents invest thousands into securing a place in a tour group that is sold as a “an elite selected player group” that will play, stay and travel to an overseas destination. Ultimately all these opportunities are, is a niche rugby tour experience. For parents with limited funds this often puts them in a worst off position to then not be able to afford studies and pathways once the player return from such tours. The parent is often left with debt without a real return of investment.

The only return on invest opportunities if a player is passionate about a career in rugby is one that offers a credible rugby development program alongside international accredited education. A rugby institute who truly understands the importance of life in- and after rugby, and is able to support a player professional completing both.

Global Exposure and Exchange

Semi-pro athletes can experience various playing styles and get exposure to a worldwide audience by competing in South Africa. The nation’s involvement in international events such as the Rugby Championship, where it competes alongside New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina, guarantees that players are continuously put to the test against elite opponents.

Cultural and Personal Growth

Cultural Exchange

Rugby is a sport, but playing it abroad also promotes cross-cultural interaction. For example, semi-pro athletes in South Africa encounter the rich cultural diversity and historical background of the nation. Their viewpoints are expanded and their personal lives are enhanced by this exchange, which helps them become more well-rounded people.

Building Resilience

Semi-pro players develop resilience through overcoming a variety of obstacles, such as adjusting to new surroundings and competing against players with varying playing styles. Their professional growth depends on this tenacity, which can also greatly improve their rugby career possibilities.

Political and Economic Influences

Rugby in South Africa is heavily impacted by the country’s political and economic environment. Sport as a vehicle for social transformation and unification has received a lot of attention since apartheid ended and the African National Congress came to power in a democratic South Africa. The country’s sports policies, which seek to make rugby available to everyone, regardless of background, are a reflection of its efforts to remedy historical injustices.

Transformation and Development Programs

In order to make rugby inclusive and representative of the nation’s demographics, the South African Rugby Union (SARU) has put in place a number of transformation and development initiatives. Through the identification and development of talent from historically underprivileged communities, these programs help semi-pro players advance their careers and support the grassroots growth of the sport.

Economic Challenges

Financial difficulties that South Africa faces, like high jobless rates and scarce resources, may have an effect on the money and assistance that semi-pro rugby players can get. These difficulties, meanwhile, also emphasize how crucial rugby is as a tool for fostering opportunity and improving communities. Gamers frequently take part in community development and outreach programs, use their platform to uplift and assist others.

The Role of Rugby in South African Society

Social Impact

Beyond the field, rugby in South Africa is important for social cohesion and national identity. Sports have the ability to unite people beyond socioeconomic and racial barriers. High-profile occasions like the Rugby World Cup in 1995, which South Africa memorably won, have had a significant effect on a country’s sense of cohesion and pride.

Participation of the Community

In South Africa, semi-pro athletes frequently take part in coaching clinics, visit schools, and do community outreach initiatives. These initiatives not only help rugby but also inspire youth by highlighting the beneficial effects that athletics can have on both the individual and the community.

International Opportunities and Challenges

Competing Internationally

International competition provides South African semi-pro athletes with exposure and experience that can further their careers. Players can improve their abilities and obtain new insights into the game by taking part in leagues elsewhere, such as in Europe or the US.

Navigating Visa and Eligibility Issues

Getting around eligibility and visa constraints is a common part of playing abroad. Rugby players should be informed on the rules established by the sport’s governing bodies as well as the immigration laws of the nations where they intend to play. Although navigating this might occasionally be difficult, doing so can open up lucrative opportunities.

  • The credo emphasises teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship as fundamental values.
  • Long-term success in rugby is achieved through a commitment to continuous improvement and collective effort.

The Rugby Institute model – The purpose

Among sports development organisations, The Rugby Institute is a shining example of quality and creativity. Fundamentally, this approach aims to develop long-term talent that combines skill, sportsmanship, resilience, and top-tier athletic training. Based on the ideas of holistic development, it includes character development, academic support, and community involvement in addition to athletic training.

Very few rugby players in school and semi-professional level understand the discipline and sacrifice that it takes to become a professional athlete. The Rugby Institute structure is designed to support the development of routine and habits, mental adaptiveness and the physiology understanding of a rugby athlete.

A Holistic Approach to Player Development

The foundation of the Rugby Institute model is a comprehensive approach to player development, acknowledging the close relationship between academic success and personal development as well as on-field success. The institute makes sure that its athletes are prepared for success in all areas of life by offering a disciplined environment that fosters both physical prowess and intellectual curiosity.

Academic Excellence

The Rugby Institute model’s emphasis on academic excellence is one of its pillars. Given that a comprehensive education is necessary for sustained success, the institute incorporates demanding academic curricula into its training program. In addition to preparing athletes for careers outside of rugby, this dual focus fosters in them a disciplined mindset and an intellectual curiosity that enhances their athletic prowess.

The Rugby Institute structure at UXi Sport embraces the passion and dedication of sportsmen and women and therefor has also designed unique rugby career programmes to address the skills needs in the industry and create jobs for the youth.

Character Building

Character development is a major focus at The Rugby Institute, in addition to the academic and physical spheres. Through leadership workshops, community service projects, and mentorship programs, athletes are taught the value of honesty, cooperation, and fortitude. In addition to improving on the field, these attributes help people become leaders in their communities, families and in business.

Sportsmanship and Ethical Play

The Rugby Institute’s model places a strong emphasis on encouraging ethical play and sportsmanship. Fairness and integrity are promoted by teaching athletes to respect officials, rival teams, and the game’s regulations. The institute makes sure that its athletes not only perform well in competition but also set an example for younger players by instilling these values in them at a young age. The coaching network at the UXi Rugby Institutes are hand selected for not only their intellectual property, knowledge and skills but more importantly the role they play as mentors and facilitators in the development of young men and women for life!

It is these lessons that become the driving forces behind successful business men and women, families and communities.

The United Knights ‘UK’ credo is based on a profound conviction about the strength of commitment and teamwork. In addition to being athletes, players serve as representatives of a group mentality that recognizes the contributions of all members. The team’s performance depends on mutual support and long-term cooperation, both on and off the field.

Resilience in Adversity

Rugby, by its very nature, demands resilience in the face of challenges. United Knights ‘UK’ instils this quality in its players, teaching them to persevere through setbacks and emerge stronger from every defeat. This resilience extends beyond the game, shaping individuals who are prepared to tackle obstacles head-on, both on and off the field.

One of the worst adversities for any athlete is disappointment due to injury or non-selection. Generation X, especially, is growing up in an era of instant gratification and solution. This creates a false sense of expectation of self and of others. The Rugby Institute aims to instil a culture of mental toughness and its coaching body teach athletes that strong character is formed through breaking through disappointment and pain barriers of all kinds, in life.

This perseverance goes beyond the field, moulding people who are ready to face challenges head-on both on and off the field.

UXi – the first choice!

UXi played a massive role in the success story of Klarissa van der Linden

Klarissa van der Linden’s ascent from UXi Sport to the Blue Bulls is a compelling story of inspiration, dedication, and the importance of mental fortitude. Her journey highlights the important role of UXi Sport in shaping her rugby career and personal development.

Overcoming Challenges:

Klarissa’s journey at UXi Sport was marked by overcoming significant mental challenges. “Most challenging for me was that I thought putting your body on the line every day would only be very physically demanding, but it was more mentally demanding,” she explains. Her advice to aspiring rugby players to overcome these hurdles is to speak vulnerably and honestly with your coaches and trusted loved ones. UXi’s coaches make this possible for us as athletes because they do not judge you, they support and facilitate the challenging journey.

This open communication provided her with the motivation and support needed to persevere and set a growth mindset. This approach aligns well with the inclusive sports management philosophy promoted by UXi Sport, where mental well-being is as crucial as physical prowess to enable an athlete to face challenges. There is such so much required of athletes to become professional rugby players, that no one prepares you for, to remain focused for 24 hours requires a positive mindset

Validation through Hard Work:

The recognition Klarissa received for her hard work was a major highlight of her time at UXi Sport. Seeing her preparation pay off on the field reinforced her commitment and validated the effort she put into her training. This acknowledgement from her coaches is a testament to UXi Sport’s high-performance program, which aims to push athletes beyond their limits and prepare them for professional success.

Building a Rugby Profile that stands the test of time:

While Klarissa’s contract with one of the most aspirational national teams, the Blue Bulls, came just a month into her time at UXi Sport, she credits the academy with helping her build a solid rugby profile. She  went to the Blue Bulls after only a month at UXi, she attributes her break-through moment to talent, but more importantly UXi’s programme that has helped her become stronger, rugby smart, fitter, create a rugby profile with video footage and credible statistical reports.

Hard work always outplays talent, and this is what the programmes continuously teaches you!

Her goal is to be playing rugby overseas, and she hopes that UXi Sport’s support will help her achieve that ambition by the end of the year. The comprehensive training and resources at UXi Sport, including creating professional rugby profiles, are designed to help athletes reach their international goals.

Developing Self-Discipline

Klarissa credits UXi Sport with significantly improving her self-discipline. Klarissa says that she has always struggled with self-discipline, and UXi motivated her to push harder than I even thought she could. The academy taught her the importance of consistently showing up and working hard for her future self. This emphasis on self-discipline is a key component of UXi Sport’s philosophy, helping athletes develop the mental toughness needed to succeed both on- and off the field, to break through the many pain barries from a strenuous squat deadlift to taking hard tackles and hits.

Advice to Aspiring Players:

Klarissa’s advice to current and aspiring rugby players at UXi Sport is clear. Her journey underscores the importance of perseverance and self-discipline in achieving success.

Committing to something you are passionate about is the key to success. You will not be motivated every day; that is when self-discipline comes into play. By proving to yourself through consistent hard work, it gets easier because I have proven to myself that hard work always pays off,” she affirms.

Analysing the impact of the 50:22 kick law changes in South African rugby tournaments between 2021 and 2022

Article overview:

Tactical kicking is crucial in rugby for both attack and defence, impacting match dynamics, creating scoring opportunities, and disrupting opponents’ strategies. Since rugby’s professionalization in 1995, World Rugby has frequently introduced new laws, such as the 2009 change affecting territory-gaining strategies and the 50:22 law in 2022, which allows teams to receive the lineout throw when kicking from their half into the opponents’ 22. This law aims to compel defensive players to cover the backfield, reducing defensive line speed and creating more space for the attacking team.

Analysis of the 2019 Rugby World Cup showed winning teams averaged more kicks per match than the losing teams, with flyhalves and scrum halves being key kickers. The study by Strydom et al.(2024) investigated the 50:22 law’s impact on kicking profiles by comparing the 2021 and 2022 seasons in South African rugby tournaments, aiming to understand its influence on tactical approaches and the success rate of 50:22 kicks during the 2022 season.

Methodology:

177 matches, focusing on the 2021 (N = 85) and 2022 (N = 92) Currie Cup and Varsity Cup rugby tournaments, were analysed to assess the impact of the 50:22 law trial using video-based performance analysis. A two-level analysis was conducted, involving the coding of all general play kicks in 2021 and 2022 seasons, and re-examining 2022 season kicks initiated from the team’s own half for 50:22 kicks.

Main findings:

1. Change in Kicking Profile (2021 vs 2022):

  • The was an overall reduction in the number of kicks from 2021 to 2022 due to players and teams adapting to new laws and changing strategies
  • Teams might kick less to minimise risks and rely on alternative strategies like running or passing.
  • There was an increase in kicks following turnovers due to exposed backfield spaces.
  • Kicking in Critical Phases: There was an increased percentage of kicks in the fourth quarter as leading teams manage tempo and trailing teams seek scoring opportunities
  • Positional Changes in Kicking: Decrease in kicks by flyhalves and fullbacks; increase by scrum halves and inside centres, with more box kicks and kicks with no preceding passes.
  • Left and Right-footed Kicks: Tactical use of left and right-footed combinations.

2. 50:22 Kick Attempts (Successful vs Unsuccessful):

  • Strategic Positioning: Establishing a ruck at midfield for better execution of 50:22 kicks.
  • Tactical Allocation: Kicking roles were assigned based on field positioning and players’ dominant foot.
  • Attacking Strategy: Use of 50:22 kicks to gain a lineout in the opponent’s 22 m area, creating scoring opportunities.
  • Timing of Successful Kicks: High number of successful 50:22 kicks in the fourth quarter.

3. Challenges and Adaptations:

  • Adjustment Period: Players and coaches undergo a phase of unlearning the old laws and adapting to new ones, potentially leading to errors.
  • Technical and Tactical Challenges: Issues with kicking angles, distances, timing, and increased complexity or ambiguity of the new law.
  • Pressure and Decision-Making: High-pressure situations could affect players’ confidence and decision-making abilities.
  • Refereeing Variability: Inconsistent enforcement of the new law by referees creating uncertainty.
  • Opposition Exploitation: Opposing teams might exploit uncertainties related to the new kicking law.

4. Coaching Strategies:

  • Emphasis on Execution: Coaches should stress the importance of timing, execution, and control in kicking.
  • Effective Communication: Fostering a cohesive team environment with a shared understanding of game plans.
  • Team Coordination: Encouraging teamwork in chase lines, kick receipts, and defensive positioning.

Practical points:

  • The study offers valuable insights for coaches, players, and performance analysts to adjust training programs, enhance team preparedness, and improve tactical approaches for the 50:22 law in rugby.
  • Training should focus on improving kicking skills, accuracy, distance, and versatility in executing various types of types. Additionally, emphasis on technique, decision-making, and situational awareness in training sessions is crucial, as it reveals players’ composure under pressure and decision-making abilities.
  • Right-footed players executed most 50:22 kicks; having both right and left-footed kickers provides tactical advantages.
  • Analysing opposing teams’ defensive patterns and kick-chase tactics helps identify effective kick areas and develop strategies to exploit defensive weaknesses.
  • The best zonal location for kicks is identified as Zone C Channel 2, providing insights into players’ strengths and areas for improvement.
