Making a difference. Changing lives. Investing in our community.

LBBIRI OutreachThe UXi Sport Limpopo Blue Bulls Institute student-athletes spent a memorable day at Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Nylstroom — sharing laughs, kicking ball, and creating moments of connection and joy.

Our players are encouraged to become role models by giving their time, sharing their skills, and opening their hearts to those who need it most.

It’s about more than rugby — it’s about inspiring others, and growing as individuals both on and off the field.

Boodskap van Abraham Kriel Kinderhuis:

“VANDAG WAS ‘N WEN!

Jeffrey Williams journey

Jeffrey WilliamsThe UXi Sport Western Province International Rugby Institute team continues to deliver the best student-athlete learning experiences — shaping not only players, but future leaders in sport.

This week, Jeffrey Williams — a former international 7s player and rugby journeyman — was invited as a guest speaker to present his journey from schoolboy rugby to elite international competition with our WPIRI student-athletes.

From Selborne College and the Sharks Academy to 25 International 7s Tournaments, 2x European Champion, 2013 World Cup Finalist, and 2016 World Series 7s Champion — Jeffrey’s journey is one of relentless hard work, resilience, and staying ready for every opportunity.

He spoke honestly about how the competition intensified as he progressed — going from being “the guy” at school to competing among top talent at Sharks. Still, he never stopped grinding. From Hamiltons Rugby Club to a trial with England 7s, Jeffrey kept showing up, stayed prepared, and made the most of every chance.

His inspirational story encouraged our High-Performance Development students to remain prepared, focused, educated, and relevant in the ever-evolving sports industry.

Jeffrey WilliamsHis message to our boys:

Work hard. Stay ready. Never give up on your dreams. Your opportunity will come — make sure you’re ready for it.

Jeffrey’s story truly resonated with our student-athletes, who, just like him, are on their own journey to greatness.

From Jeppe High to the Czech Rugby Fields: Devon Spruit’s Inspiring Journey

Devon Spruit’s rugby story is one of perseverance, growth, and faith. Starting out at Jeppe High School for Boys, Devon played in the second team, where his coaches and teammates helped shape his early rugby foundation. Although he wasn’t immediately thrust into the spotlight, his passion for the game never wavered.Devon Spruit

After school, Devon wasn’t sure where rugby would take him, but he kept pushing forward by playing club rugby for the Wasps. His determination paid off when he was selected for the IPT Lions team. It was during a tournament held at Harlequins Rugby Club that Devon’s journey took a pivotal turn—he was invited to join the UXi Sport Harlequins International Rugby Institute (HIRI), marking the true beginning of his post-school rugby career.

Thanks to the support of Coach Gert and HIRI, Devon earned a fantastic opportunity to play overseas this year! He went on to represent Rugby Club Mountfield Říčany in the Czech Republic’s top league, the Extra Liga Ragby XV. This experience not only tested his skills on the field but also challenged him personally, as he learned from seasoned international players and grew in confidence and ability.

Devon SpruitDevon’s journey shows that even if you don’t start at the top, with hard work, dedication, and a bit of faith, doors will open. His story continues to inspire young players who dream of making it big, proving that the path to success isn’t always straight—but it’s worth every step.

A massive congratulations to Ricardo Brandão, a 2024 alumnus of UXi Sport Harlequins International Rugby Institute, on his selection to the SA Under-21 Cup squad for Lions Rugby!

Ricardo’s rise through the ranks has been nothing short of impressive. In 2024, he earned his first cap for the Lions U19 team, showing early signs of greatness. Fast forward to 2025, and he’s already competed in his first Varsity Cup season for WITS, making a strong impact at university level.

Now, with his selection for the U21 Cup, Ricardo continues to prove he is a name to watch in South African rugby.

How Do You Become a Performance Analyst?

To answer this question, it’s essential to first understand what a Performance Analyst (PA) is. PAs are critical support staff for coaching teams, using various techniques to deliver key information that drives team performance. These professionals utilize data, technology, and observation to enhance athletic performance and optimize individual or team outcomes. They analyze multiple aspects of sports, including physical performance, technical skills, tactical strategies, and even psychological factors, to provide actionable insights and recommendations.

Key Responsibilities of a Performance Analyst:

  1. Filming Training and Matches
    • Use video recording devices such as cameras, drones, and AI-powered cameras to capture all angles of training sessions and match performances.
  2. Data Collection and Management (Live and Post-Match)
    • Code and capture performance indicators using video and analysis software.
    • Store data in databases to analyze performance trends over time (longitudinal analysis).
  3. Statistical Representation of Performance Indicators and Feedback
    • Utilize tools like Excel, Power BI, or Tableau to represent data visually for easy interpretation by players and coaches.
    • Highlight strengths and areas of concern based on data and video analysis.
    • Simplify complex data into actionable insights—arguably the most critical responsibility of a PA.
  4. Pre-Match Analysis (Opposition Preparation)
    • Study opponents’ game footage to assess their playing style, strengths, weaknesses, and trends.
    • Provide coaches and players with insights to gain a competitive edge.
  5. Hardware and Software Procurement and Maintenance
    • Procure and maintain all necessary equipment and software for running a performance analysis department, ensuring they stay within budget constraints.
    • Stay updated on advancements in performance analysis technologies.

Skills Required to Be a Performance Analyst:

  1. Analytical Thinking: The ability to interpret and manage large datasets.
  2. Technical Proficiency: Mastery of performance analysis software like Nacsport, Hudl, Dartfish, and data visualization tools like Power BI.
  3. Communication: The ability to present findings effectively to players and coaches in a clear, non-technical manner.
  4. Filming Expertise: Proficiency with cameras and the ability to capture high-quality footage.
  5. Sports Knowledge: A solid understanding of the sport you’re analyzing, which can be developed over time.

Pathway to Becoming a Performance Analyst:

  1. High School
  • Build a passion for sports by participating in as many activities as possible.
  • Focus on subjects like math and information technology to develop relevant skills.
  1. Tertiary Education (Degree)
  • Pursue a degree in a related field, such as:
    • Sports Science
    • Data Analytics
    • Exercise Science
    • Sports Coaching
    • Statistics
  1. Tertiary Education (Diploma or Certification)
  • Supplement your degree with certifications or diplomas in sports coaching, performance analysis, or sports management.
  • Look for programs that include work-integrated learning opportunities.
  1. Master’s Degree (Optional)
  • A master’s degree focusing on performance analysis in sports can significantly enhance your career prospects.
  1. Field Experience
  • Start gaining experience early by volunteering with sports teams, even at the high school level.
  1. Internship Programs
  • Build experience through internships where you can work under the guidance of experienced mentors.

Employment Opportunities for Performance Analysts:

While performance analysis is a growing field in South Africa, there are various career opportunities at entry level positions and beyond:

  1. Professional and National Sports Teams:
    • The pinnacle of a PA’s career, but these positions are limited
  2. Sporting Institutes and Academies:
    • A great place to develop a strong skill set and build a career pathway to elite teams and professional development.
  3. University Teams:
    • Many universities emulate professional environments with high-performance programs.
  4. Sports Governing Bodies:
    • Oversee high-performance programs, focusing on holistic review and monitoring.
  5. High Schools:
    • Elite schools often develop sport performance analysis departments, presenting opportunities for PAs to guide students and create new programs.
  6. Performance Analysis Companies:
    • Work for companies like Stats Perform, Hudl, or StatsBomb, which provide professional services to various sport teams who offer performance analyst roles.
  7. Sports Clubs:
    • Clubs, despite budget constraints, offer excellent entry-level opportunities to gain experience.

Where can I go to learn how to become a Video and Game analyst?

  • UXi Sport offers a national certificate and internship program that combines both theoretical and practical training, introducing their students to various clubs and unions whilst learning. This will immediately offer the required exposure to workplace preparation, readiness and most importantly work placement.

Final Thoughts:

Performance analysis is an evolving field with growing demand for specialists. Starting early and equipping yourself with the right tools and skills can put you on the path to becoming an elite Performance Analyst. With dedication and experience, you can play a pivotal role in the success of athletes and teams.

What Does a High-Performance Rugby Programme Consist Of?

The goal of a high-performance rugby program is to help players attain elite levels by improving their conditioning, abilities, and strategic awareness of the game. Intense physical training, skill development, mental conditioning, and expert coaching are all combined in these programs. A high-performance program gives players the framework and tools they need to thrive in competitive rugby, whether they are seasoned players hoping to progress or aspiring pros.

Key Takeaways

  • High-performance rugby programs focus on physical conditioning, technical skills, and tactical understanding.
  • Mental resilience and psychological training play a crucial role in player success.
  • Personalized training plans and regular assessments ensure targeted growth and improvement.

Core Components of a High-Performance Rugby Programme

Physical Conditioning and Strength Training

Physical conditioning is the cornerstone of any high-performance rugby program. Rugby requires a lot of strength, agility, and endurance due to its intensity. Typical programs consist of:

  • Strength training for power and stability
  • Cardiovascular conditioning for endurance during long games
  • Agility drills to enhance reaction time and mobility
  • Speed training to build acceleration on the field

Skill Development and Technical Training

The greatest rugby players are experts at the fundamentals. A high-performance program’s core component is skill development, which focuses on enhancing methods like

  • Passing and catching for accuracy and fluidity
  • Tackling techniques to ensure safe and effective defense
  • Kicking for precision, whether for field goals or positioning
  • Scrummaging and rucking to build cohesion and effectiveness in team play

Tactical and Strategic Training

Every movement has a strategy that must be understood. Tactical training is a component of high-performance programs that helps players gain strategic insights.

  • Game analysis sessions to study opponents and learn from past games
  • Set-piece practice to refine formations like scrums, lineouts, and mauls
  • Playbook sessions where players learn specific strategies and plays for different scenarios

Mental Conditioning and Psychological Resilience

Building Mental Resilience

Mental preparedness is just as important in high-performance sports as physical preparedness. Rugby programs incorporate mental conditioning to give players the fortitude to overcome obstacles. This could involve:

  • Visualization techniques to mentally prepare for high-pressure situations
  • Goal-setting workshops to encourage players to focus on progressive improvement
  • Resilience training to help players bounce back from setbacks on and off the field

Developing Focus and Decision-Making

In rugby, having the ability to act quickly under pressure is essential. High-performance rugby programs place a strong emphasis on honing these abilities by:

  • Mindfulness exercises to enhance concentration and presence
  • High-pressure scenarios in practice to simulate game-time conditions
  • Analytical training to improve decision-making and adaptability during fast-paced plays

Personalization and Performance Analysis

Individualized Training Plans

Individualized training is one advantage of a high-performance program. Since every athlete has different talents and areas for growth, customized strategies make sure they can focus on the things that are most important to them.

Performance Tracking and Feedback

High-performance rugby programs include regular performance evaluations. Coaches may ensure each player’s consistent progress by giving tailored feedback and modifying training as necessary through the use of GPS tracking, video analysis, and other techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Know Who Is the Best Rugby Academy to Attend in South Africa?

Because rugby is so popular in South Africa, there are several top-notch rugby academies to pick from. However, you might wonder, “How do I know which rugby academy in South Africa is the best to attend?” given the abundance of possibilities. The most important aspects of selecting the best academy for your professional and personal development are covered in this article.

Key Takeaways

  • Prioritize academies with accredited coaches and a strong reputation
  • Look for programs with holistic development, including academics and wellness
  • Ensure there are opportunities for networking and career advancement

Choosing the Right Rugby Academy

Check Accreditation and Reputation

Verifying the rugby academy’s reputation and certification is one of the first stages in choosing the best one. Seek out academies connected to reputable groups such as the South African Rugby affiliated Union.. High standards in coaching and player development are sometimes indicated by an academy with a strong reputation and glowing reviews.

Evaluate the Coaching Staff

Having good coaching is crucial for anyone who wants to progress in rugby. Professional coaches with a lot of experience can make a big difference in your development. Look for academy institutions whose coaches have earned accreditation from groups such as World Rugby or SARU; their knowledge guarantees that you will get the best instruction available.

Balancing Academics and Athletics

Education and Life Skills

The top rugby academies offer well-rounded curricula that emphasize both academic and athletic growth. Some academies assist athletes in striking a balance between their training and studies by providing formal education programs or forming alliances with colleges or universities.

UXi Sport offers and accredited Life Skills programme that aims at preparing players for life in and outside of rugby. It focusses on key topics that will ensure the player is prepared for the workplace. Players receive additional accredited certification for these modules.

Physical and Mental Conditioning

Fitness and well-being must be prioritized in high-performance training. To assist players in developing resilience, a number of top rugby academies in South Africa provide support services in the areas of sports medicine, nutrition, and mental health. This all-encompassing strategy improves general wellbeing and sports performance.

UXi Sport places a huge emphasis on mental wellness and through its data monitoring platform continuously monitors the player’s wellness, sleep patterns, fatigue and stress levels.

Career Advancement and Networking Opportunities

Connections in the Industry

Strong connections within the rugby business will enable a top academy to offer students networking opportunities that may result in professional exposure. Your prospects of forming relationships that could result in hiring or perhaps overseas opportunities are increased when you form partnerships with teams and agents.

Alumni Success and Testimonials

Look up the current whereabouts of the academy’s alumni. An academy that has a track record of turning out successful alumni or professional athletes may be a good indicator that they will support you in achieving your objectives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I consider when choosing a rugby academy?
Look for accreditation, quality coaching, a focus on academics, and industry connections.

Do I need prior experience to join a rugby academy?
Some academies cater to various skill levels, so prior experience may not be required.

What is the typical age range for academy programs?
Most academies target players between ages 16-20 for optimal development.

The financial investment required for a Rugby development program

The cost of tertiary studies in South Africa is more affordable than any other country in the world, however many students and parents are unprepared for the investment when it comes to post school studies.

With many accredited public and private institutions in South Africa , high-school graduates are spoilt for choice, however navigating the difficult decision of what to study and where, with the resources available is no easy task, and can become a very stressful journey for many. There is also very little time spent in educating scholars on career options, scarce and critical skill shortages, employability of particular graduates, international opportunities, subject choices and workplace readiness.

This information becomes important when evaluating the investment it will require for post high school studies versus employability and salary expectations. This leaves many students with a feeling of disillusion once graduated and realising their earning potential with the skill sets that they have acquired.

UXi Sport understands the complexities of the job market in South Africa and its various provinces. It has therefore invested into offering a wide variety of study options to ensure the optimal employability of its graduates. The economic sectors of every province are unique and this becomes important to evaluate when deciding where you reside and or wish to live and work in the future. The most important emphasis must be on “life after sport”, and although being a full-time athlete sounds like a dream for many, it is not a reality for the majority. Becoming a full-time professional athlete is only a reality for a small percentage of individuals and even so, age and injuries can limit the ability to earn potential.

The journey to becoming a registered student at UXi Sport

  1. How do I know what to study whilst in a sport development program?

UXi Sport will assist you with a free career aptitude test that will navigate you into the various options that you have available that not only is in line with entry requirements but also takes your unique aptitude and personality into consideration.

  1. How do I apply to write an aptitude test with UXi Sport?

You can contact UXi Sport through the website enquiry form or alternatively the Chatbot who will put you in touch with a career consultant to assist you. UXi believes that a happy student is a successful student, therefore they always encourage communication and feedback through their academic program coordinators. Depending on the field of study and how far into the academic year, changing direction is easier than you might think. It is also not uncommon that students change programmes and they are willing to assist a student in every way possible to ensure that they achieve maximum success with the financial investment the student has made.

  1. What does it cost to attend a Rugby Academy?

Programmes vary from institution to institution depending on duration and what the programme entails. Students have to realise that an athletic programme requires many hours of personal coaching both on-and -off the field. The level of coaches and institutional accreditation also sets institutions apart and it is important to research credibility and track records of institutions.

  • Twelve-month program with a one-year accredited national program varies from R67 000 to R85 000 per annum (depending on the choice of education).
  • Twelve-month High-Performance development program only with no studies R55 000
  1. How can I find funding to attend UXi Sport?

UXi Sport is an accredited Institution through its academic subsidiary HFPA. As such financial institutions offer study loans for their programmes that may also include accommodation, clothing, laptop and other funding support, depending on what your parent/sponsor or you qualify for. If a parent/sponsor works for the South African government, assistance can be obtained via Fundi up to R40 000 without any credit assessments.
