Through the UXi Rugby Institutes, there are several opportunities for players to be seen and taken up into semi-professional and professional teams. Team selections, such as the Union U/20 and U/21 teams are common and even senior team selections are possible.

Through this programme, student-athletes are given all the tools they need to develop into successful, professional players.

Since its inception, UXi Sport has assisted in

    > 15% are playing nationally or internationally;
    > 20% are still in the UXiRI system for their 2nd and 3rd year development to further their rugby careers and studies

Springbok Representative


Former Western Province Rugby Academy (WPRA) student-athlete, Kurt-Lee Arendse, made his Springbok debut against Wales on the 9th of July 2022. Kurt-Lee was a WPRA student in 2016 and was coached under our very own Alastair Theys and Anton Moolman.

At the Academy, Kurt-Lee was a fast-footed winger, who showed eXtreme amounts of talent and skills. There was never a doubt in anyone’s minds that Kurt-Lee would make it all the way to the top! 

Kurt-Lee was also selected as a URC Elite 15 player during the Vodacom URC Awards 2022/23.

Springbok Representative


Former Western Province Rugby Academy (WPRA) student, Grant Williams, made his Springbok debut against Wales on the 9th of July 2022. Grant (known as “Mollie” at the WPRA) was a Stellenbosch Rugby Academy (this Academy was taken over by the WPRA) in 2015/2016, and was coached under our very own Warren Petersen, Hendrik Louw and Francois du Toit.

At the Academy, Grant was a talented winger who always gave his best on and off-field. Grant always had big dreams, and knew that he had to work hard and consistently to have a shot at making those dreams come true. His hard work finally paid off, and his dreams have come true.

Blitzboks Representative


Ricardo “Ricky” Duarttee (WPRA 2021) made his debut for the Blitzboks at the 2022 Dubai 7s tournament. Ricardo’s eXtraordinary performance in the 7s scene has earned him the nickname of “Tricky Ricky”.

Ricardo was a standout player at the Western Province Rugby Academy, even at 15’s level. We are proud of how Ricardo has developed as an eXcellent 7s player!

South African Tag-Rugby Representative


Former Western Province Rugby Academy (WPRA) student, Kyle Saunders, was selected for the South African Tag-Rugby squad. Kyle was a Stellenbosch Rugby Academy (this Academy was taken over by the WPRA) in 2015/16, and was coached under our very own Warren Petersen, Hendrik Louw and Francois du Toit.

Kyle is still eXtremely involved in UXi Sport and the Western Province Rugby Academy, and often hosts skills clinics for our current student-athletes.

Springbok Sevens Call-Up for Lidene Kruger!

From the hockey field to the rugby pitch, Lidene Kruger (GRI 2024) has shown that passion and bold choices can unlock extraordinary opportunities.

After joining the UXi Sport Griquas Rugby Institute in 2024, Lidene’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable. She was selected for the Junior Springbok U20 Women’s Camp in 2024, and in 2025, continued her journey at Sol Plaatje University, proudly representing the Griquas Women on the provincial stage.

Now, Lidene has reached new heights with a call-up to the Springbok Women’s Sevens Training Camp — an elite opportunity reserved for the nation’s top emerging talent.

Her fearless attitude and relentless drive continue to inspire, and the entire UXi Sport family couldn’t be prouder!

Tucker Trickey (WPIRI Old Boy – Class of 2023), recently represented the USA National 7s Team at the EAAST 7s Tournament in France. A true ambassador for UXi Sport on the global stage!

Dylin Mulder (PRI 2022) received the incredible opportunity to join the Lindenwood University Rugby Programme.
Based in Misourri, USA, Dylan is proving to be a powerhouse Flanker, and is eXcelling in his American rugby career!

Sean Munemo (WPRA 2020) is living out his rugby and academic dreams in the USA! Sean is currently playing for Wayne State College in Nebraska, while also studying Engineering Technology.

Sean is an incredibly talented flanker, who joined the WPRA in 2020, after playing in the UK for a period of time. At the UXi WPRA, Sean excelled in all things on- and off-field. From skills training, to conditioning, to his incredible mindset and his one-of-a-kind ability to motivate others – this is what provided him the opportunity to play USA College Rugby.

NAMIBIA

  1. Gianluca Savoldelli represents Namibia U21 at the Barthés Trophy
    Gianluca Savoldelli (WPIRI 2025), a proud student-athlete at the UXi Sport Western Province International Rugby Institute, was selected for the Namibia U20 Training Camp and went on to represent Namibia U21 at the 2025 Barthés Trophy, helping lead the team to championship victory.

    Ben Burger (PRI 2024-2025), a proud student-athlete at the UXi Sport Pumas Rugby Institute, was selected for the Namibia U20 Training Camp and went on to captain the Namibia U21 national team to a historic victory at the 2025 Barthés Trophy.

    SW Kuhn (WPIRI Old Boy – Class of 2023), a graduate of the UXi Sport Western Province International Rugby Institute, joined the Namibia U21 team that claimed victory at the 2025 Barthés Trophy after his involvement in the U20 Training Camp.

    Owen Hawanga (WPRA 2022) has proudly earned his place as a Namibian International Rugby Player. An eXtremely talented centre, Owen has represented Namibia at both U20 and Senior National Team level, including competing in the prestigious Barthes Cup in Kenya.

  1. Wiehan Kruger signs with Lechia Gdańsk Rugby Club in Poland
    Wiehan Kruger (WPIRI Old Boy – Class of 2022), is taking on Europe with Lechia Gdańsk Rugby Club in Poland in 2025. His rugby journey continues to inspire!

Devon Pretorius (GRI 2021) received a professional rugby in Poland! Devon made his rugby debut in 2022 for RC Arka Gdynia in Gdynia, which currently competes in the Ekstraliga League.

NETHERLANDS

  1. Dutch National Player
    David Weersma (WPRA 2015/16), who has been playing internationally for the past seven years, was recently nominated as “Player of the Pool stages” for the Rugby Europe Men’s XV Championship for his contribution to the Dutch National team.

    Joren Buijs (WPIRI 2024–2025) has been selected to represent Rugby Nederland U18 at the 2025 European Championship U18.

  1. Calvin Gunter heads to New Zealand for 2025 rugby journey
    Calvin Gunter (2025), one of UXi Sport’s determined and talented student-athletes, is taking his rugby career international by heading to New Zealand in 2025 to play and coach at a New Zealand Rugby club. A nation known for producing some of the best rugby players in the world — and Calvin is ready to rise to the challenge!

    Joe Kaufmann (WPIRI Class of 2024) was accepted into the Crusaders International Rugby Academy in New Zealand — one of the world’s top development programmes.

    A global UXi Sport ambassador, Joe continues to grow from strength to strength on the international stage!

Devon Spruit’s rugby story is one of perseverance, growth, and faith. Starting out at Jeppe High School for Boys, Devon played in the second team, where his coaches and teammates helped shape his early rugby foundation

  1. Brandon Arriaga represents Mexico’s National Rugby Team – Serpientes
    Brandon Arriaga (WPIRI Old Boy – Class of 2022), has made his mark internationally by being selected for the Mexico National Rugby Team – the Serpientes. A proud moment for UXi Sport!

  1. Jonathan Knipe represents NTK Cobras at Sevens Tournament in Malaysia
    Jonathan Knipe (2024), a dedicated UXi Sport student-athlete, took his game to the international stage by representing the NTK Cobras at a top-level Sevens Rugby Tournament in Malaysia. A proud achievement and an unforgettable experience flying the UXi flag abroad!

GERMANY

German Club Representative
Janrico Vermeulen (PRI 2021) spent some time pursing a European rugby career, where he played for TSV Victoria Linden e.V. Rugby Club in Hanover, Germany. Janrico won the joint “Man of the Match” award in his final match for Victoria Linden.

Rugby Coach at German Club
Ruan van der Schyff (WPRA 2022) is a second-year student-athlete who was selected to work as a rugby coach at BTHV in Bonn, Germany. This is part of a UXi-Germany partnership, in which we provide opportunities for our students that fully embody the pillars and values of UXi Sport.

Ruan is the third student-athlete to be selected for this programme.

Hanru Smith (WPRA 2020/21/22) is a third-year student-athlete who was selected to work as a rugby coach at BTHV in Bonn, Germany. This is part of a UXi-Germany partnership, in which we provide opportunities for our students that fully embody the pillars and values of UXi Sport.

Hanru is the second student-athlete to be selected for this programme.

Rugby Coach at German Club
Dylan van der Merwe (WPRA 2021) was provided the incredible opportunity to work as a rugby coach at BTHV in Bonn, Germany. This coaching programme is primarily based on coaching and introducing rugby to players at the club, from U/8 level right through to U/16 level.

This is part of a UXi-Germany partnership, in which we provide opportunities for our students that fully embody the pillars and values of UXi Sport.

JP Evert (WPRA 2021) has taken his rugby career to international levels! JP was approached by the popular German rugby club, VfR Döhren 06, and contracted for two years. Based in Hanover, Germany, JP thrived on the international stage and loved every moment of his German eXperience.

Morné van Jaarsveld (PRI 2022) is currently pursuing a professional rugby career in Germany, where he plays for TSV Victoria Linden e.V. Rugby Club in Hanover. After making his mark at the UXi Sport Pumas Rugby Institute and representing the Pumas U21 Currie Cup Shield team, Morné became one of Victoria Linden’s top try-scorers in his debut season and earned a full rugby contract, German language studies, and a career placement. His coach commends him as a committed and impactful player on and off the field.

ZIMBABWE

  1. Zimbabwe National Representative

Tinashe Gowere (WPRA 2021/22) was selected for the Zimbabwe National Men’s 7’s Rugby Team, popularly knowns as the “Zimbabwe Cheetahs”. They competed in the World Rugby Challengers 7’s Series in Cape Town.

Emmanuel Farawu (WPRA 2021) was selected for the Zimbabwe National U/20 “Junior Sables” men’s squad, that traveled to Canada for their international competition.

  1. Portuguese Club Representative

Connor Clark (GRI 2021) is currently playing overseas for Clube de Rugby Arcos de Valdevez, based in Portugal. This Portuguese rugby club currently plays at the Campeonato Nacional Honra/Super Bock – Portugal’s top level Rugby Union championship.

JAMAICA

  1. Jamaican National Player 

Lewis Ellingham (WPRA 2018 International student) made his debut at the end of 2022 for the Jamaican National side. Jamaica took on Gibraltar in an international match in Birmingham, England.

CANADA

Joe Kaufmann rises through Canadian Rugby ranks
Joe Kaufmann (WPIRI Old Boy – Class of 2024) is making waves in Canada!

He earned a long-list spot for the U20 National Team, competed in the 2025 Oceania Rugby Challenge in Fiji, and received a rugby scholarship to UBC — one of Canada’s top rugby programs.

Joe also received Rugby Canada’s “Love of the Game” Scholarship and was selected for the U20 7s Provincial Team and the Men’s Rugby Canada 7s long list.
